Nishita Shah spent 17 years perfecting the art of traditional dance in her native India.She learned dance as a way to celebrate and preserve her culture, eventually performing with a dance company worldwide. After Shah came to America in 2001 at age 20, she married and started a family. But her love of dance traveled with her and led her to found the Nritya-Arpan Dance School. “It was in my blood. I couldn’t quit. I had to continue even after I came here,” Shah said.Shah rents studio space and conducts weekend classes where students can learn various styles of Indian dance, from classical to folk to the “Bollywood” style made popular by the Indian film industry. “Bollywood is world-famous. All kinds of communities are adapting those styles nowadays, even Bollywood dancing is used as a fitness workout. It’s a new trend here,” Shah said. She said TV shows featuring dancing competitions have aided in the popularity. -
